Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. If you have any questions or comments, or even suggestions of art or other great artists, feel free to contact me at any time at theodorebond@joblo.com.

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie (or, if you prefer, infected people) movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later, and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. The theatrical release date is June 20th, 2025 – and with that date swiftly approaching, a new poster has been unveiled. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Alfie Williams (His Dark Materials), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). In the original film, Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus. Boyle and Garland went through several endings for 28 Days Later before landing on the one movie-goers saw in theatres – and that ending was the only one where Jim survived. So he’s still out there, ready to live through another rage virus nightmare 28 years later. He may not be in the first 28 Years Later, but he’s supposed to come back “in a surprising way” at some point.

As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, “The 2002 film grossed $82.7 million globally and spawned a sequel, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, though Boyle and Garland were only nominally involved as executive producers.” Speaking with Empire, Garland said (with thanks to Screen Rant for sharing the quote), “[28 Years Later is] not in conflict [with 28 Weeks Later, but] canon [is] not a very Danny Boyle word.Boyle added, “It’s not mapped out like a scientific formula.” When 28 Years Later came up during an interview with IndieWire, Fiennes decided to go ahead and tell us all about it: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.

Now we have an official synopsis to go by as well: Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Academy Award-nominated writer Alex Garland reunite for 28 Years Later, a terrifying new story set in the world created by 28 Days Later. It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.

Thanks to their deal with Sony, each of these new films will be receiving a theatrical release and will have budgets in the $60 million range. 28 Years Later has a budget of $75 million. Boyle and Garland are producing 28 Years Later with Bernie Bellew, original producer Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures when that company backed 28 Days Later. Murphy is executive producing.

Garland also wrote the screenplays for the sequels that will come after 28 Years Later. Of the two 28 Years Later projects currently in the works, Boyle directed the first one, then passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta for the sequel, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple. The second film has already wrapped production. Boyle might circle back to direct 28 Years Later Part III.

Will you be catching 28 Years Later on the big screen in June? Take a look at the new poster, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

The post 2025 Summer Horror Movie Preview appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
It’s that time of the year when studios release their big Summer blockbusters, hoping to rake in the dough. But with large tentpole releases struggling, there seems to be a shift in the kinds of films we’re getting. Sure, we’re still getting our usual slew of Superhero fare, but the horror genre has never looked better. Horror has been such a proven commodity that it feels like we have more summer horror releases than ever before. And I can’t blame studios as horror has been a consistent moneymaker, usually for pretty cheap. So let’s parse through all the releases, and see which are worth a trip to the theater for. And a recent trailer may have dropped one off this list. Proving that not all trailers help build anticipation: some kill it completely.

Now let’s get into our 10 most anticipated horror movies of Summer 2025.

Clown in a Cornfield – May 9th

Based on the book series of the same name, you’re either down for a film called “Clown in a Cornfield” or you’ve already started scrolling. It’s a pretty basic concept about Frendo the Clown taking out teenagers in a midwestern town. Chris Bumbray reviewed this a few months ago, and I was lucky enough to see it already as well, and it’s an absolute blast. This is a slasher that general audiences can really latch onto. Slasherheads needs to go in with reasonable expectations, though, as it’s rather tame overall.

Final Destination: Bloodlines – May 16th

After 13 long years, the Final Destination series finally returns! Everything that’s come out so far makes it look like they’re flipping the formula on its head and changing some rules, so I’m going into this a bit more trepidatious than others. I’m a massive fan of the franchise (as evidenced by all the videos I’ve done on it on our Horror YouTube Channel) and just hope it gets a proper return that doesn’t ruin the films that came before it. I’m grateful to get a big screen send off for Tony Todd.

Bring Her Back – May 30th

The creators of Talk To Me are back with their follow-up film, and it already has the internet abuzz. With a unique marketing campaign and an absolutely stellar leading lady in Sally Hawkins, this horror film takes a look at a brother and sister, and the terrifying ritual their foster mother is putting them through. This looks genuinely creepy in a way that few films can achieve. Here’s hoping that the Philippou Brothers pull it off again.

Dangerous Animals – June 6th

This may just be my most anticipated film of the entire summer. A serial killer that uses sharks to kill his victims? Sign me right the fuck up! Jai Courtney and Hassie Harrison star in this gripping thriller about a surfer kidnapped by a deranged psychopath and tied up on his boat. She has to escape before being fed to the hungry sharks around the boat. I adore any kind of shark thriller as they tend to be really entertaining, even if the quality is questionable (we’ll get into that later). The FX work looks great here and it looks to have a great grasp on how to utilize the sharks without them looking fake and cheap.

28 Years Later – June 20th

Danny Boyle returns to the franchise (I guess we can call it that now) that he helped create. As the title states, this is set 28 years after the original film and its outbreak, zeroing in on a small island, separated from the infection. A father (Aaron Taylor Johnson) and his son leave the safeties of the island for some sort of…manhood ritual? That’s what the trailers make it seem like. Not much longer till we find out for sure, but it sounds like we won’t see Cillian Murphy showing up in this planned trilogy until at least the second film, as he’s been confirmed to not be in this one.

M3GaN 2.0 – June 27th

This is only here because of you people, and I am absolutely dreading it. This trailer plays before damn near every single movie that I see and it has become the bane of my existence. I hated the first film and can’t stand this “wink at the camera” style of filmmaking. The fact that they’re going the T2 route, having M-3-gen (sound it out) become a hero to take down a more advanced version just has me yawning. Here’s hoping the TikTok dance was worth our cinematic integrity.

Together – August 1st

Husband/Wife duo Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in this horror film that I’ve honestly been staying away from, ever since I heard it has body horror. So let’s look at what the brief description says: “After moving to the countryside, a supernatural encounter starts to transform a couple’s love, their lives, and their flesh.” Sign me right up.

Weapons – August 8th

Steeped in mystery, Weapons definitely has one of the best marketing campaigns of any of the films on this list. We recently got an awesome trailer, and we still know very little, just that a bunch of kids in Julia Garner’s class disappeared in the middle of the night, and it looks like the town is blaming her. This is one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer and for good reason: Zach Cregger is proving to be a formidable name in the world of horror.

The Toxic Avenger – August 29th

After what feels like eternity of waiting, we’re finally getting to see Peter Dinklage as Toxie in this reboot of the cult classic. Co-starring Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood, Macon Blair’s remake transforms a downtrodden janitor into a gross and grimey superhero. People who have seen it seem to love it, and the trailer looks like the same kind of fun we got from the Street Trash remake last year.

The Shallows (2025) – ????

Everyone remembers the Blake Lively movie from 2016 right? It was a pretty decent shark thriller that left a decent impression on folks. So I’m sure none of us expected China to remake it, and give it a Groundhog’s Day-style twist, with the shark killing our protagonist over and over again. But that’s exactly what they did and it looks absolutely glorious. This is the only film on the list without its release date officially announced but come on: like they’re not going to release a shark movie in the summer?! Keep your eyes here on JoBlo.com for the eventual release announcement and review.

Boyle was there to introduce the trailer and revealed that the movie has a massive scale compared to the previous films in the franchise. It also has a huge aspect ratio; 2:55:1. There’s no word on when this new trailer will be making its way online.

The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). In the original film, Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus. Comer, Taylor-Johnson, and Fiennes are all featured in the new trailer. Boyle also confirmed that Murphy will show up in this trilogy at some point, but we might have to “wait a bit for him.”

As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, “The 2002 film grossed $82.7 million globally and spawned a sequel, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, though Boyle and Garland were only nominally involved as executive producers.” Speaking with Empire, Garland said (with thanks to Screen Rant for sharing the quote), “[28 Years Later is] not in conflict [with 28 Weeks Later, but] canon [is] not a very Danny Boyle word.” Boyle added, “It’s not mapped out like a scientific formula.“ When 28 Years Later came up during an interview with IndieWire, Fiennes decided to go ahead and tell us all about it: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. DaCosta confirmed to CinemaCon attendees that the second film is already shot and a rough cut has been put together. 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple is said to be “informed” by 28 Years Later, but is also different from its predecessor. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray notes that the sequel appears to be centered on Fiennes’ character, and that DaCosta shared a photo of him looking like Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

Fans of the 2002 film 28 Days Later and its follow-up 28 Weeks Later have been waiting seventeen years for another entry in the franchise, hoping we’d someday see a movie titled 28 Months Later. We’re not getting that one, but 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are currently working on reviving the franchise, and they’re going to make this revival worth the wait. Not only are we getting a new movie called 28 Years Later, but we’re actually getting a whole trilogy of sequels! Sony has reported that the film is set for a June 20th, 2025 release date. The film began shooting in late May around the Northeast of England. But what else do we know about this 28 Years Later sequel trilogy?

LONG IN THE WORKS

Way back in 2009, we heard that Paul Andrew Williams (The Cottage) was on board to direct 28 Months Later… but that project didn’t make it into production. Since then, we’ve heard Boyle and Garland mention 28 Months Later every once in a while. They would say there was a great idea for the sequel, then later say it might never happen. In a 2022 interview, Boyle said Garland had already written the script, and it might finally be the time to make it into a movie. In the middle of 2023, the collaborators confirmed to Inverse that they were having serious talks about the sequel, which they were calling 28 Years Later. Garland said, “A few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny always liked the idea.“ Boyle added, “So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.

28 Weeks Later wasn’t as successful as its predecessor, making $65.8 million on a budget of $15 million vs. 28 Days Later‘s $84.6 million on a budget of $8 million. That’s part of the reason why another sequel hasn’t happened sooner – along with the fact that Garland wasn’t overly pleased with the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, which he didn’t write. Garland told Inverse, “I resisted [making a sequel] for a long time because there were things about 28 Weeks that bugged me. I just thought, ‘F*ck that. I’d rather try to write a different story in a different world.’“ Now he’s ready to write not just one but three new stories in the 28 Days Later world. No plot details have been revealed.

DIRECTORS

Alex Garland is expected to write the scripts for all three of the 28 Years Later movies, but apparently didn’t want to direct them. Danny Boyle directed the first one, then for the second film, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, he passed the helm over to The Marvels and Candyman director Nia DaCosta. Production on DaCosta’s sequel began immediately after Boyle wrapped filming on his and wrapped in October. They wanted to have the sequel director signed on before filming on the first movie begins, as they want to “make sure each director is on the same page in regard to the story while also having time to bring their own vision to life.” 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple is set to reach theatres on January 16, 2026.

Boyle is likely to return to the helm for the trilogy capper. We’ve heard that the third film wouldn’t go into production until after the first movie is released, so the filmmakers would have the chance to see how audiences respond to it.

In April of 2025, attendees at the CinemaCon event got a sneak peek at a new trailer. Boyle was there to introduce the trailer and revealed that the movie has a massive scale compared to the previous films in the franchise. It also has a huge aspect ratio; 2:55:1.

28 Days Later

CILLIAN MURPHY

In 28 Days Later, Cillian Murphy played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England (sort of similar to the start of The Walking Dead, which began in comic book form around the same time the movie was released) that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus. Boyle and Garland went through several endings for the film before landing on the one movie-goers saw in theatres – and that ending was the only one where Jim survived. So he’s still out there, ready to live through another rage virus nightmare 28 years later. If Boyle and Garland decide to put him in the story.

While doing the press rounds for Oppenheimer last year, the Oscar winning Murphy told Collider, “I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, ‘Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.’ So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it.“ Despite the fact that Murphy is willing to reprise the role of Jim and is returning as an executive producer on 28 Years Later, we still haven’t heard confirmation that he’ll actually be in the movie. While talking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast a couple months ago, Murphy said (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “It’s for (Danny Boyle and Alex Garland) to speak about, I suppose, but I think it’s been brewing for a while. The first movie was so important for me, as an actor. I love working with those guys. Alex has an idea. And Danny directing is just huge. Watch this space.

In the end, it looks as though Murphy will be back somewhere in the trilogy, with Sony chief Tom Rothman teasing his return to the franchise in a “surprising way”.

WILL JIM BE ONE OF THE INFECTED?

While some might think that means Jim has become one of the infected in the 28 years since the first film, the actor did mention that his return will be in a way that grows. Presumably, that means he’ll have a smaller role in one film, then a bigger part in a follow-up. That doesn’t mean he WON’T be infected though, as it’s possible Jim could play a member of the infected who starts to regain his humanity, kind of in a way that could pay tribute to the most famous zombie of the all, Day of the Dead‘s Bub.

When the trailer (embedded at the top of this article) dropped online, a lot of fans thought they spotted Murphy in there, thinking that an emaciated infected person seen in the trailer was Murphy. Would they really spoil that surprise in the first trailer? Apparently not. The Guardian has been able to confirm that the emaciated infected person in the trailer is not played by Cillian Murphy, but by newcomer Angus Neill. According to The Guardian, “Neill, an art dealer specialising in old masters, was talent-spotted by Boyle, who was much struck by his distinctive looks. Neill also works as a model, with his professional profile suggesting he has a 28-inch waist.” Neill told them, “Danny told me he’d always had me in mind for the role. So we met up, hit it off, and I agreed to take part. On set he has an extraordinary ability to hypnotise you, and working with him on the film was a very, very intense experience.

Empire

Apparently we shouldn’t even expect to see Murphy in the first 28 Years Later at all. “[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line,” producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire. “He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

CAST

While we wait to hear what Murphy’s role will be, other casting news has been popping up. Industry scooper Daniel Richtman had shared the rumor that Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) were in talks to play the lead roles. Deadline has since reported that they’ve heard Comer is indeed in the cast, along with Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Skyfall), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). There has been no further word about Hunnam’s involvement, and it looks like he’s no longer on the docket. However, recently Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) was added to the cast in a supporting role, with the buzz being that his character is meant to emerge as a lead in follow-up movies. Details on the characters these actors might be playing are, of course, being kept under wraps.

In early July, Jodie Comer was spotted on the set of the film, and some images made their way online:

Comer told Total Film, “I remember seeing 28 Days Later and I was so struck with how it was so rooted in reality, and it was more about the exploration of us as a species and our behavior and how we react. It felt like there was a lot of emotional truth within the film that really anchored it. That’s also what I felt when I read this script.

STORY

When 28 Years Later came up during an interview with IndieWire, Ralph Fiennes decided to go ahead and tell us all about it: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities.

Empire gives some more information on the plot, revealing that Britain’s straggling survivors (the rest of the globe remains relatively unaffected, leaving the UK to fend for itself) have learned to live in a full-on post-apocalyptic world. Here, Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Jamie, Jodie Comer’s Isla, and their 12-year-old son Spike (Alfie Williams) are part of a community on Holy Island, aka Lindisfarne, connected to the UK mainland by a causeway only briefly accessible when the tide recedes each day. It soon comes time for young Spike to take a rite-of-passage trip beyond the safety of Lindisfarne, to open his eyes to the true state of the nation. Needless to say, things don’t go to plan.

Boyle told Empire that the characters live in “a closed and necessarily very tight community. There are very strict defence laws, obviously, to survive that long in what is effectively an ongoing hostile environment. They’ve created a successful community, as they see it.

Garland said, “This is very narratively ambitious. Danny and I understood that. We tried to condense it, but its natural form felt like a trilogy.

Garland has said that fans will find that 28 Years Later does not conflict with the previous sequel 28 Weeks Later, even if canon isn’t something Boyle pays much attention to. Speaking with Empire, Garland said (with thanks to Screen Rant for sharing the quote), “[28 Years Later is] not in conflict [with 28 Weeks Later, but] canon [is] not a very Danny Boyle word.” Boyle added, “It’s not mapped out like a scientific formula.

As for what inspired the new film, Garland said, “Covid was not in my mind because it was too recent and too present, but Brexit was. [Especially how the rest of the world began to view the UK.] A sense of the globe just sort of shifting its position. Turning their backs, not really looking in this direction. Not really giving a shit [about the UK].” Producer Andrew Macdonald said, “Nothing is allowed into Britain and nothing is allowed out. Britain has paused.

WRAPPED

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Sunday, August 18th, producer Andrew Macdonald said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “We’re making, hopefully, three more 28 films with the first one called 28 Years Later that Alex has written, and Danny has directed, and has finished shooting. Then we’re just about to start, tomorrow morning, actually, part two. And then we hope there’s going to be a third part and it’s a trilogy.

After filming was finished, the folks at Wired have learned that the movie was shot using “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s.” iPhone 15 Pro Maxes, to be exact. The fact that 28 Years Later was shot with smartphones, despite having a budget of $75 million (and thus becoming the biggest movie to date filmed with smartphones), seems quite fitting, given that 28 Days Later was one of the first major feature films to be shot with the Canon XL-1, a $4000 MiniDV prosumer camera. As for why the iPhone info didn’t leak out until a month after 28 Years Later wrapped filming, it’s because those who worked on the film had to sign NDAs about that detail.

As mentioned, Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple has also wrapped production.

DISTRIBUTION

There was a bidding war over the distribution rights to the 28 Years Later trilogy, with Warner Bros. and Sony emerging as the final competitors – and Sony taking the win in the end. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Each movie will have a budget in the $60 million range but it’s unclear how goalposts or compensation may have changed during the high-stakes negotiations. A theatrical release was of great import to the filmmakers.” Sony had an edge in this race due to the fact that it’s headed up by Tom Rothman, who used to be at Fox and worked with Boyle on eight different movies there. Release dates have not yet been announced.

Boyle and Garland are producing 28 Years Later, which apparently ended up having a budget of $75 million. Bernie Bellew is also producing, as are original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures when that company backed 28 Days Later. As mentioned, Murphy is executive producing.

And that’s everything we know about the 28 Years Later trilogy at this point. Are you looking forward to these films? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

28 years later

It’s been a long road, but 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. 28 Years Later has already found a wide audience with its haunting trailer and the movie is meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. The theatrical release date is June 20… and it has been said that 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy returns for this film “in a surprising way.”

Garland also wrote the screenplay for the sequel that will come after 28 Years Later. For the second film, Boyle passes directing duties over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta – and that sequel, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, has already wrapped. Now, according to Production List, the start date for shooting 28 Years Later Part III is slated for March 31. While it was originally thought that production was to start after the first hits theaters, with this start date, barring any problems during principal photography, the whole trilogy could be wrapped before the first film in this new trilogy debuts with general audiences. Also, according to Empire, Boyle is likely to return to the helm the trilogy capper.

The cast of 28 Years Later also includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). In the original film, Murphy played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus.

Thanks to their deal with Sony, each of these new films will be receiving a theatrical release and will have budgets in the $60 million range. 28 Years Later has a budget of $75 million.

Boyle and Garland are producing 28 Years Later with Bernie Bellew, original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures when that company backed 28 Days Later. Murphy is executive producing.

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie (or, if you prefer, infected people) movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. The theatrical release date is June 20th, 2025… and when the film reaches the screen, Garland has said that fans will find that 28 Years Later does not conflict with the previous sequel 28 Weeks Later, even if canon isn’t something Boyle pays much attention to.

Of the two 28 Years Later projects currently in the works, Boyle directed the first one, then passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta for the sequel, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple. The second film has already wrapped production. Boyle might circle back to direct 28 Years Later Part III, but that one won’t get made until the filmmakers see how audiences react to the first movie.

28 Years Later, Cillian Murphy

It was previously reported that Cillian Murphy would return to play Jim in 28 Years Later, but producer Andrew Macdonald has confirmed that Murphy won’t actually make an appearance—at least not in the first movie.

[On] this, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I’m hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line,” Macdonald told Empire. “He’s involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy.

When the first trailer for 28 Days Later was released, some fans believed the emaciated infected person glimpsed was Murphy. It wasn’t. The role was played by an extra named Angus Neill, and director Danny Boyle’s partner even warned him that his appearance would cause some debate on whether or not they were looking at Murphy. “I showed my girlfriend the trailer and she said, ‘People will think that’s Cillian,’” Boyle said. “I said, ‘Don’t be silly.’ I ignored her. So I’ve eaten a bit of humble pie since.

28 Years Later stars Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier).

The sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has already been shot, so Murphy may appear in that movie. A third film is planned, but production won’t start until after the release of the first movie.

The official synopsis for 28 Years Later: “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.” The film will hit theaters on June 20th, with the sequel slated for a January 16, 2026 release.

As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. In fact, when producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed that filming on 28 Years Later had wrapped back in August, he followed that up by saying that they were about to start working on the second chapter in this trilogy. Boyle directed the first one, then for the second film he passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta. The sequel, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, wrapped production in October. 28 Years Later is set to reach theatres on June 20th, 2025, and 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple will follow six months later, on January 16, 2026. But what about 28 Years Later Part 3? Who will be directing that one, and when will it start filming? According to Empire, Boyle is likely to return to the helm for the trilogy capper, which won’t go into production until after the first movie is released, so the filmmakers will have the chance to see how audiences respond to it.

Garland wrote the screenplays for 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, and is expected to write the last entry in the trilogy as well. While we don’t have any information on what happens in The Bone Temple, cast member Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) revealed some details on 28 Years Later: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities.

Cillian Murphy is not playing the emaciated infected person shown in the recently released 28 Years Later trailer

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland have finally reunited to make a sequel to their zombie movie classic. As we reported earlier last year, this sequel, which is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. The theatrical release date is June 20… and it has been said that 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy returns for this film “in a surprising way.”

As the trailer dropped, there was a quick shot of an emaciated zombie that caused many viewers to double-take. Commenters online wondered if Cillian Murphy would have some sort of surprising appearance as an infected person. A debate began online on whether that infected person in that quick clip was actually Murphy. Empire Magazine has now revealed a new look at 28 Years Later with their cover featuring a good look at the field zombie. Empire posted on their social media, “The rage has only just begun. Danny Boyle is back with #28YearsLater – unleashing a new era of the flesh-eating saga. Empire enters the apocalypse with Boyle, Alex Garland, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and more. On sale Thurs 16 January.”

28 Years Later Empire

The cast of 28 Years Later also includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). In the original film, Murphy played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus.

Garland also wrote the screenplay for the sequel that will come after 28 Years Later. Of the two 28 Years Later projects currently in the works, Boyle only planned to direct the first one. For the second film, he has passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta – and that sequel, titled 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, has already wrapped production.

When 28 Years Later came up during an interview with IndieWire, Fiennes decided to go ahead and tell us all about it: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.“

This sequel is set up at Sony, it’s called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. In fact, when producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed that filming on 28 Years Later had wrapped back in August, he followed that up by saying that they were about to start working on the second chapter in this trilogy. Boyle only planned to direct the first one; for the second film, he passed the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta. The sequel, 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple, wrapped production in October… and now we know when it’s going to be released. 28 Years Later is set to reach theatres on  June 20th, 2025, and 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple will follow six months later, on January 16, 2026.

This release date puts the film in direct competition with Weapons, a mysterious horror project from New Line Cinema and Barbarian writer/director Zach Cregger. Weapons could move into 2025, since New Line has already held positive test screenings for it, but Deadline hears that they’re content with the January 16, 2026 release date, which is the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There’s also an unspecified Disney movie scheduled to be released that weekend.

In addition to Fiennes, the cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). It has also been said that 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy returns “in a surprising way.”

In the original film, Murphy played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus. Boyle and Garland went through several endings for 28 Days Later before landing on the one movie-goers saw in theatres – and that ending was the only one where Jim survived. So he’s still out there, ready to live through another rage virus nightmare 28 years later. As The Hollywood Reporter previously noted, “The 2002 film grossed $82.7 million globally and spawned a sequel, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, though Boyle and Garland were only nominally involved as executive producers.”

Neill also works as a model, with his professional profile suggesting he has a 28-inch waist.”

Neill told them, “Danny told me he’d always had me in mind for the role. So we met up, hit it off, and I agreed to take part. On set he has an extraordinary ability to hypnotise you, and working with him on the film was a very, very intense experience.

The cast of 28 Years Later also includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier). Filming on the first installment in this trilogy wrapped last back in August… and while plot details have been kept under wraps up to this point, cast member Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) has just spilled the beans!

When 28 Years Later came up during an interview with IndieWire, Fiennes decided to go ahead and tell us all about it: “Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it’s meant to launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. Filming on the first installment in this trilogy wrapped last month, and the folks at Wired have learned that the movie was shot using “a bunch of adapted iPhone 15s.” iPhone 15 Pro Maxes, to be exact.

The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).

Garland is already writing the screenplay for the sequel that will come after 28 Years Later. Of the two 28 Years Later projects currently in the works, Boyle is only planning to direct the first one. For the second film, he’s passing the helm over to Candyman and The Marvels director Nia DaCosta. Thanks to their deal with Sony, each of these new films will be receiving a theatrical release and will have budgets in the $60 million range. As mentioned, 28 Years Later has a budget of $75 million.

Boyle and Garland are producing 28 Years Later with Bernie Bellew, original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures when that company backed 28 Days Later. Murphy is executive producing. The film is scheduled to reach theatres on June 20th, 2025.

At least two of those three potential movies are happening for sure, as producer Andrew Macdonald revealed during an appearance at an Edinburgh International Film Festival event this past Sunday that filming has wrapped on 28 Years Later and that, as of yesterday, work has officially begun on the second movie!

The cast of 28 Years Later includes Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave). It has also been said that 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy returns “in a surprising way.”

At the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Sunday, Macdonald said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “We’re making, hopefully, three more 28 films with the first one called 28 Years Later that Alex has written, and Danny has directed, and has finished shooting. Then we’re just about to start, tomorrow morning, actually, part two. And then we hope there’s going to be a third part and it’s a trilogy.

28 Years Later, Erin Kellyman

Deadline reports that Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story) has joined the cast of 28 Years Later, the first installment of Sony’s new trilogy, which will follow 28 Days Later and 28 Months Later.

Exactly who Erin Kellyman will play in 28 Years Later is being kept under wraps, but she joins a cast which includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original movie, is also expected to return in a “surprising way.” The first installment of the 28 Years Later trilogy will be directed by Danny Boyle and scripted by Alex Garland, with production expected to kick off later this year.

Kellyman is best known for her roles in Solo as well as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, The Green Knight, and Willow. She will next be seen starring alongside Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson in Steve McQueen’s Blitz for Apple TV+. The actress also recently wrapped production on Eleanor the Great, which serves as the directorial debut of Scarlett Johansson.

It’s been over twenty years since Danny Boyle and Alex Garland brought us 28 Days Later. While the blood-thirsty characters aren’t technically zombies, the film is still credited with helping to bring the zombie genre back to life. The film was followed by 28 Weeks Later, but Boyle and Garland were only involved as executive producers. Fans have been demanding a follow-up for years, and not only is it finally happening, but we’ll be getting three movies. Exciting times.

Although Garland is expected to script each installment of the trilogy, the second movie will be helmed by someone else. It was reported earlier this year that Nia DaCosta (Candyman) was in talks to helm the 28 Years Later sequel. While it may seem a little quick to lock down a director for the sequel before the first movie has even been shot, the plan is for production on the second movie to kick off just as soon as the first wraps.

28 Years Later will hit theaters on June 20, 2025.

28 Days Later Cillian Murphy

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are finally reuniting to make a sequel to their zombie (or, if you prefer, infected people) movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it may even launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. Last year, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy said he’d gladly be in a sequel if it was made by Boyle and Garland, and when this project was announced, it was confirmed that Murphy is on board as an executive producer… but as months have gone by and Boyle has assembled the cast, it’s remained unclear whether or not Murphy will actually appear in the movie. Now Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman has told Deadline that Murphy is back for 28 Years Later, but he’s coming back in “a surprising way.”

Deadline asked Rothman what Sony projects he’s excited for, and he included 28 Years Later on the list: “I think I’ve made eight movies with Danny Boyle and I hold him in the Pantheon and we have his new 28 Days trilogy. It’s 28 Years Later, but not in any way a literal sequel.

When asked if Murphy, who just won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer, is back for this sequel / these sequels, Rothman said, “Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way. This is Danny at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, like we had with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes when you put a real signature director into a commercial arena, it elevates it.

If or when Murphy appears in 28 Years Later, his co-stars will include Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).

In the original film, Murphy played bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma to find himself in an apocalyptic England that’s overrun by people who have been infected by a rage virus. Fans of 28 Days Later are eating well after the announcement that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are reuniting to work on a continuation of their popular zombie film. We’ve been keeping track of what’s happening with the new movie in our 28 Years Later: Everything We Know article. The biggest revelation so far is the news that the upcoming sequel will actually be a trilogy of films. Both Garland and Boyle confirmed their collaboration. Garland said, “A few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny always liked the idea.“ Boyle added, “So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.“

Deadline is now reporting that Jack O’Connell will be joining the cast of the trilogy. He will be among actors such as Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes. The role that O’Connell has been cast in has not been revealed. However, it has been conveyed by sources that he will be in a supporting role in the first film, then will play more of a lead in the following entry. O’Connell has been on a great streak of casting, as he was also reported to be cast as a villain in the secret Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan genre project, which is also rumored to have horror elements in it.

Alex Garland is expected to write the scripts for all three of the 28 Years Later movies, but apparently didn’t want to direct them. Danny Boyle will only be directing the first one. For the second film, possibly titled 28 Years Later Part 2, he’ll be passing the helm over to The Marvels and Candyman director Nia DaCosta. Production on DaCosta’s sequel will begin immediately after Boyle wraps filming on his. They wanted to have the sequel director signed on before filming on the first movie begins, as they want to “make sure each director is on the same page in regard to the story while also having time to bring their own vision to life.”

Boyle and Garland are producing 28 Years Later. Bernie Bellew is also producing, as are original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures when that company backed 28 Days Later. As mentioned, Murphy is executive producing.

Danny Boyle’s upcoming 28 Years Later is already assembling quite the cast. According to Deadline, Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (The Fall Guy), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) are set to star in 28 Years Later.

There were rumblings that Jodie Comer was in talks to join the cast of 28 Years Later last month, with Charlie Hunnam also said to be in talks for a role; I imagine that could be the role that Aaron Taylor-Johnson will now play. The first installment of the 28 Years Later trilogy will be directed by Danny Boyle and scripted by Alex Garland, with production expected to kick off later this year.

What this new sequel will bring remains to be seen, but Murphy has said that he’s game to return. “I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, ‘Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.’ So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later,” Murphy said last year. “But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it.

Nia DaCosta

Deadline reports that Candyman director Nia DaCosta is in talks to helm the second installment of the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy set up at Sony Pictures.

The first installment of the 28 Years Later trilogy will be directed by Danny Boyle and scripted by Alex Garland, with production expected to kick off later this year. The report states that the sequel will start shooting immediately after, which is why Sony is already in the process of locking down DaCosta. The studio also wants to make sure each director is on the same page in regard to the story while also having time to bring their own vision to life. Garland will be scripting each installment of the trilogy.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but recent rumours have pointed to Jodie Comer and Charlie Hunnam being in talks to star in 28 Years Later.

UPDATE: Daniel Richtman has shared some more casting news: “Charlie Hunnam is in talks for the second lead role in the movie alongside Jodie Comer.” Hunnam’s previous acting credits include Sons of Anarchy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Triple Frontier, The Gentlemen, Rebel Moon, and Children of Men.

The original article follows:

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are finally reuniting to make a sequel to their zombie (or, if you prefer, infected people) movie classic. As we reporter earlier this year, this sequel is set up at Sony, is going to be called 28 Years Later – and it may even launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. While we wait to find out if Murphy is going to be starring in 28 Years Later, industry scooper Daniel Richtman is reporting that Jodie Comer is in talks to join the cast.

Comer’s credits include The End We Start From, The Bikeriders, Killing Eve, The Last Duel, Free Guy, and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Details on the character she might be playing in 28 Years Later have not been revealed.

Garland (whose movie Civil War reaches theatres next Friday) is already writing the screenplay for the sequel that will come after 28 Years Later. Of the two 28 Years Later projects currently in the works, Boyle is only planning to direct the first one. For the follow-up, he’ll be passing the helm over to someone else. Boyle and Garland are producing 28 Years Later with Bernie Bellew, original producer Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice, who was the head of Fox Searchlight Pictures when that company backed 28 Days Later. As mentioned, Murphy is executive producing.

While talking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Murphy still didn’t reveal if he’ll be in the movie, he simply said, “Watch this space.”

Here’s Murphy’s full quote on 28 Years Later, with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription. When asked if he could say anything about the sequel, he said, “It’s for (Danny Boyle and Alex Garland) to speak about, I suppose, but I think it’s been brewing for a while. The first movie was so important for me, as an actor. I love working with those guys. Alex has an idea. And Danny directing is just huge. Watch this space.” That “Watch this space” does sound promising…

28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland are finally reuniting to make a sequel to their zombie (or, if you prefer, infected people) movie classic. As we reported three weeks ago, this sequel is going to be called 28 Years Later – and may even launch a whole trilogy of 28 Days Later sequels. We know for sure that Garland will be writing a second film. Studios and streamers have spent the last three weeks scrambling and bidding, hoping to secure the rights to make this movie / these movies with Boyle and Garland… and now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that the bidding war has a winner. The situation came down to Warner Bros. and Sony, and Sony has emerged the victor.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The deal details are unavailable. Each movie would have a budget in the $60 million range but it’s unclear how goalposts or compensation may have changed during the high-stakes negotiations. A theatrical release was of great import to the filmmakers.” Sony had an edge in this race due to the fact that it’s headed up by Tom Rothman, who used to be at Fox and worked with Boyle on eight different movies there.

28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy is on board as executive producer, and may end up acting in the film as well.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, Murphy starred in 28 Days Later as a man who wakes up from a coma, alone in a hospital, only to discover the outside world had been overtaken by the undead 28 days earlier. “The 2002 film grossed $82.7 million globally and spawned a sequel, 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, though Boyle and Garland were only nominally involved as executive producers.”

Are you excited to hear that 28 Years Later and at least one more sequel beyond that are finally happening? What do you think of the project ending up at Sony? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

28 Years Later

Fans have been begging for another installment of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s 28 Days Later for years… and they’re finally getting one. THR reports that Boyle and Garland are reuniting for 28 Years Later, a new sequel which is expected to be shopped to studios, streamers, and other potential buyers in just a few days.

28 Days Later was followed by 28 Weeks Later, but Boyle and Garland were only involved as executive producers. THR states that Boyle will direct 28 Years Later, with the hope being that it could launch a new trilogy. Garland will write all three movies, with the budget for each said to be somewhere around $75 million. That would place the new movie well above the $8 million budget of the first and the $15 million budget of the second.

After all these years, it’s hard to believe the 28 Days Later sequel might actually be happening, but the pair finally began seriously discussing it last year. “A few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later,” Garland said last year. “Danny always liked the idea.” Boyle added, “So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself, I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea.

The original movie starred Cillian Murphy as Jim, a bicycle courier who awakens from a coma to discover that a “rage virus” has spread throughout the country, causing a total societal collapse.

What would you like to see in 28 Years Later?

Yesterday, we shared the news that 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland say they have been having “serious talks” about finally making a sequel that would be called 28 Years Later… and in a new interview with Collider, 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy has said that he’d gladly be in a sequel if it’s made by Boyle and Garland!

Murphy, who is currently doing the press rounds for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (where he plays the title character), had this to say about a 28 Days Later sequel: “I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, ‘Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.’ So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it.

If Boyle and Garland decide to put him in the story.

Since there was a follow-up called 28 Weeks Later (which wasn’t written by Garland, but was executive produced by Boyle), many fans have expected the next sequel to be called 28 Months Later. But if it happens, it looks like Boyle and Garland will be skipping the Months title and going right to Years.

28 Months Later was in the works at one point. In 2009, Paul Andrew Williams (The Cottage) was even on board to direct the film… but it never made it into production.

Would you like to see a 28 Days Later sequel that reunites Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Cillian Murphy for a story set 28 Years Later? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.
