2025 Movie Preview

With 2024 coming to a close, it’s time to start looking to the future for our cinema needs. What does the year hold in store for us cinephiles? While 2024 held some surprise hits, giant blockbusters, and small films that could, it’s looking like 2025 movie releases will hold more of the same. We can hope that the good fortune that Hollywood has brought us will continue into the new year and keep theater attendance up. Here’s our 2025 Movie Preview:

Den of Thieves: Pantera

Den Of Thieves: Pantera – January 10

Gerard Butler is back chasing down diamond thieves on the streets of Europe. He stumbles across the planning of the largest diamond heist ever planned. If you liked the first movie, then this will probably be more of the same. I’m personally happy that Gerard Butler is making some fun B-movie action films like back in the day. Plane was fun, and I’m excited to see these types of films at the theater again.

better man

Better Man – January 10

A biopic about UK pop star Robbie Williams as we see his childhood all the way through his superstardom. Robbie will be playing himself, but how do you do that without it being weird? What if you make it so he’s a chimp? Sure. With Pharrell releasing his biopic as a Lego movie and now Robbie Williams replacing himself with a CGI chimp it seems biopics are really trying to gain quirk appeal.

Back in Action, release, Netflix, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diax, first-look images

Back In Action – January 17

Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement and teaming up with Jamie Foxx for this Netflix original film. They play former CIA agents who are pulled back in when their identities are exposed. While I’m glad to see Diaz back on screen after a decade away, it’s odd that this generic spy action movie did it. Maybe just the idea of being in a movie with Jamie Foxx again was enough.

Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31, first look

Star Trek: Section 31 – January 24

This direct to Paramount+ film is a spin off from Star Trek: Discovery starring Michelle Yeoh as her character Philippa Georgiou. This was originally planned as a series, but after COVID-19 delays, it was scrapped. Later they revived the idea for an original movie. Star Trek has always been a beloved franchise but with new movies going direct to streaming, will we ever see them return to the big screen?

bridget jones, isla fisher, jim broadbent, nico parker

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – February 13

For the first time in nine years, Bridget Jones is back! Only this time, it will be on Peacock in the United States and then in theaters everywhere else in the world. Seems backwards but okay. Bridget Jones is now a single mom and trying to figure out how that works when you’re trying to get back into the dating pool. Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant return, along with some other familiar faces. Are we past the Bridget Jones fandom, or is there still more life in this franchise?

Captain America: Brave New World, Red Hulk

Captain America: Brave New World – February 14

After the events of Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is donning the shield as the new Captain America. Harrison Ford steps in for the late William Hurt as the new President Ross, who has a big red secret to share. Marvel only had one release last summer, and it seemed to work really well for them. Let’s see if something without Hugh Jackman’s claws still registers for Marvel fans.

2025 Movie Preview

Mickey 17 – March 7

The new film from Bong Joon-ho sees Robert Pattinson sent on a space mission because he is seen as expendable. With technology, he can be regenerated if something goes wrong. This time, something goes wrong, and he begins to experience an existential crisis. This darkly comedic film looks like a good time as we see Mickey die in numerous different ways and still have to get up to go to work the next day.

black bag

Black Bag – March 14

Steven Soderberg’s spy thriller is coming out with no details on the plot. With a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, you can bet lots of people will be interested in checking it out. Soderberg has always had an interesting take on just about any film he releases, and this will be no different.

Snow White

Snow White – March 21

Disney continues its trend of doing live-action remakes of its old animated films. This one caused a stir when it was announced, as people seemed divided on how to handle the seven dwarfs aspect of the film. Ultimately, the dwarves will be completely CGI. It will be interesting to see how this plays in a modern culture. Expect some new songs, and Gal Gadot will be playing the evil queen, which is inspired casting compared to the look of the original character.

2025 Movie Preview

A Minecraft Movie – April 4

With Super Mario Bros. and the Sonic movies being big hits, it’s no surprise that the hugely popular game Minecraft would be getting its own movie. Jack Black once again jumps on board to play Steve, the generic character most players take control of when booting up Minecraft. Jason Mamoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kate McKinnon round out the cast as random characters are pulled into the cubic world and need the help of an expert crafter to get home. Seems very Jumanji.

The Accountant 2, release date

The Accountant 2 – April 25

I don’t think anyone saw this sequel coming. In the first film, Ben Affleck played a neuro-divergent accountant who had a side job as a hitman. The film was a modest hit but nothing that would seem to warrant a sequel. Some other familiar faces from the first one return.

Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* – May 2

The second of Marvel’s offerings this year sees a bunch of cast-off characters from previous Marvel films being rounded up for a new agency. Yelena will be leading the team of previous supervillains who are now taking jobs for the government. Of course, this will be complicated by a lot of in-fighting and some unexpected speedbumps. The trailer makes this look like a lot of fun so here’s hoping it will give MCU fans some laughs while providing some great action scenes.

2025 Movie Preview

Lilo & Stitch – May 23

This is the second of Disney’s live-action remakes. Stitch crash-lands on Earth and is adopted by a young girl. Hijinks ensue as others come looking for him. The original had a great sense of humor, and the trailers showing Stitch invading other Disney properties were great. I have no idea if this will translate well into live-action, but kids will probably love it.

mission impossible

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – May 23

This was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part II, but after the last film underperformed, the title was quickly changed. It will continue the storyline from the last film, and we see Ethan Hunt trying to stop the deadly AI from causing worldwide chaos. Of course in order to shut it down, they have to make their way to the submarine that is crashed on the ocean floor.

Karate Kid: Legends

Karate Kid: Legends – May 30

The franchise returns to the big screen as we see Daniel from the original and Mr. Han from the 2010 “remake” join forces to mentor a new student. It’s a strange crossing of the streams which retcons the remake into being set in the same continuity. With Cobra Kai just ending when this hits theaters, will fans even care enough to go check it out? Fans of the original movie got their nostalgia fix with the series. Are there people who have nostalgia for the 2010 movie?

Ballerina

From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina – June 6

The spin-off of the John Wick films hits the big screen. We were introduced to the Ballerinas in John Wick 3. Now they get a film all their own while Keanu Reeves will still make an appearance since this is set during that time period. Ana de Armas takes over the role of Eve as she looks to get revenge on the people who killed her family. The intricate world of John Wick is fascinating to explore, and this gives us a chance to see even more of it.

2025 Movie Preview

Elio – June 13

An animated film from Disney that follows Elio. He’s a young space fanatic who gets tasked with saving the universe. They have been struggling to come up with animated films that really stick with audiences that aren’t already established Pixar properties. The shine of the early Pixar films has really dimmed after Disney bought them. Hopefully we can see Disney regain its footing with animated films like we used to have.

How to Train Your Dragon

How To Train Your Dragon – June 13

Dreamworks seems to be taking a cue from Disney and remaking some of their more popular animated properties. We’re getting another round of dragons as we see the first meeting of Hiccup and Toothless. Again. Not sure if this trend will ever end, but at least Dreamworks doesn’t have as deep of a catalog as Disney. When can we expect to see a live-action Kung Fu Panda?

Jurassic World Rebirth, Jurassic Park

Jurassic World: Rebirth – July 2

Scarlett Johanssen is taking the lead role this time around. No one seems to have learned any lesson about bringing dinosaurs back to life. This time it looks like explorers have to go in to get DNA samples from some prehistoric animals to help cure a disease. Universal really just wants to see if there is any juice left to squeeze out of this fruit. It may be time to let it sleep for a few decades before heading back in.

Superman

Superman – July 11

James Gunn takes his stab at the Man of Steel as the DC Universe reboots itself on-screen once again. Reports are that Gunn held an early screening for WB execs and that it did not go well. That could be internet fodder, but it doesn’t instill a lot of hope for the new version of the DCU. With the DC shows on the CW just wrapping up, we’ll have to see if Gunn’s Superman will connect with comic fans. The recent trailer seemed to gain a lot of views very quickly, so we at least know that fans are interested.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs Movie – July 18

Those magical little blue creatures will grace theater screens once again. This time, the film will be fully animated and musical. Paramount/Nickelodeon will take on the film, and it seems to be inspired by the popularity of the Troll movies. Rhianna will voice Smurfette and be joined by Nick Offerman, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, Dan Levy, and Hannah Waddingham.

fantastic four first steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25

Marvel’s first family finally makes their way into the MCU. While they have been on-screen before as part of Fox’s Marvel movies, this time, we’ll see what the MCU has in store for the group. Marvel’s third film in six months will really test if audiences are in superhero fatigue or not. The early footage shown at Comicon seems fun, so hopefully, it will bring something new.

Liam Neeson, The Naked Gun remake

Naked Gun – August 1

Liam Neeson is hoping to try something drastically different than we’ve seen from him before. He has some big shoes to fill, as Leslie Nielsen based the whole second half of his career on the original Naked Gun. It will be hard to see anyone else trying to play that role. Plus, does that type of comedy have a place anymore?

Freakier Friday

Freakier Friday – August 8

Disney’s calendar of releases this year is crazy, as we see the reteaming of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The last film was a remake of an old Disney Classic. Now, twenty-one years later, we are getting a sequel. Expect more body-swapping jokes as the Lindsay Lohan resurgence seems to be taking shape. She’s been on an upswing lately, and hopefully, we can see her get a victory lap as she has matured.

Nobody

Nobody 2 – August 15

Somehow, Bob Odenkirk became an action star after starring in Nobody back in 2021. Now, we get to see some more middle-aged dad action as he returns for this sequel. The first movie really worked to show what appears to be an ordinary man who decides to get back into a life he left a long time ago. Now that we have seen him for what he really is, here’s hoping for more action and more Christopher Lloyd running around with a shotgun.

Downton Abbey a new era review

Downton Abbey 3 – September 12

The third film spin-off of the popular period drama. Many of the cast return to once again play their characters, showing the divide between the upper class and the working class. This drama captivated audiences when it first premiered, and both previous films have been big hits. It only makes sense to keep it going with another film.

Tron Ares

Tron: Ares – October 10

We’re traveling back into the world of Tron. Jeff Bridges is back, along with a slew of other familiar faces like Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Jared Leto. This time, a program is sent from the digital world to the real world. Each Tron film so far has pushed the boundaries in terms of special effects and technical marvels. Let’s see what they come up with this time.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2 – October 24

We’re heading back to the arcade, so get your quarters ready. The reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise continues as our heroes are heading back to Outland to continue the fight for all existence. The last film was released during the pandemic, so a true gauge of the popularity is hard to judge, but audiences seem to have a positive response. During the initial film franchise run, the second entry pushed it off a cliff. We can hope they learned their lesson.

Now You See Me 3, release

Now You See Me 3 – November 14

Another entry into the magic mystery franchise is in the pipeline. All of our sleight-of-hand artists are returning, but no plot has been released so far. The previous movies have gained an audience through their unique use of stage magic and illusions to foil their adversaries. It is a fun and interesting way of doing a mystery based action film. If it lives up to the previous entries, then audiences should leave the theater happy.

Wicked: Part Two, Wicked: For Good

Wicked: For Good – November 21

The second part of the recent smash hit. Those who haven’t seen the Broadway play or read the book will get to see how the story ends. I expect more fantastic songs, some great visuals, and more Oz. We all need all the Oz we can get. Let’s all get ready to defy gravity once again.

2025 Movie Preview

Zootopia 2 – November 26

Disney has quite the release schedule this year, and we’re not even done yet. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are teaming up to solve a wild case that could change their entire lives. It will be fun to travel back into the world of Zootopia and see where the characters are. It looks like more of the same fun we had in the last film.

Zoe Saldaña, Avatar: Fire and Ash

Avatar: Fire And Ash – December 19

It’s time to head back to Pandora. Last time James Cameron dealt with water motifs and explored more of the world. Looks like we’ll be dealing with fire this time around. While the films seem to always be a wonder of motion capture and CGI, it would be great to see Cameron go back to other projects before his film career comes to an end. We can always hope.

Spongebob Squarepants

The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants – December 19

Hey Kids! SpongeBob is back with another movie. This time, he will explore the depths of the ocean to deal with the ghost of the Flying Dutchman. This franchise just keeps engaging generation after generation. At this point, The Simpsons might be about the only animated franchise that has lasted longer. As long as fans keep checking out the movies, the more they will keep making.

James Gunn is setting the record straight about going back behind the camera for his Superman film in the wake of deceptive reports. While responding to a fan inquiry on Threads this weekend, Gunn clarified that he’s scheduling a “day and a half” of pickup shots, not reshoots, to enhance his Superman film. Responding to the additional footage rumor and whether or not he plans to shoot more footage for the foundational superhero film, Gunn said:

“Sort of. Not a few days. We’re doing a day and a half of pickup shots. No scenes. No reshoots. Just a handful of individual shots to enhance the film.”

While some fans challenged Gunn’s response in some poorly veiled attempt to out him about filming new scenes, others commended Gunn for his transparency, saying they appreciate hearing from the horse’s mouth instead of being kept in the dark. James Gunn has traditionally been up-front about his intentions for projects he lays hands on. His behavior could stem from being an old-school film fan and knowing what it’s like to fan out over things you feel passionately about.

A lot is riding on James Gunn’s Superman. The Gods and Monsters arc of the new DCU kicks off with the seven-episode animated series Creature Commandos, but many await Superman like it’s the end all be all of the franchise. If Gunn’s Superman film stumbles at the box office – and with fans – it brings Gunn and Safran’s ability to lead DC Studios into question, tainting enthusiasm for future projects. Superman blows everyone’s socks off in a perfect world, teeing Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios (Clash of Empires), The Authority, Teen Titans, and more. I shudder to think of the backlash if Superman doesn’t land with precision, especially as someone whose job is to report on such things.

Thankfully, Gunn sounds highly confident about his Superman film, and pickup shots could enhance the film in ways we’ve yet to realize. I hope Superman comes out of the gate swinging, instilling confidence in fans and getting them jazzed about the DCU’s future. I’m dying to see Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and my friends have been up my ass about reading The Authority for months. A strong showing from Superman could only mean good things for the DCU’s future. Let us pray.

The Man of Steel and his dog Krypto ponder the majesty of planet Earth in a new image from James Gunn’s Superman https://www.joblo.com/superman-krypto-james-gunn/ https://www.joblo.com/superman-krypto-james-gunn/#respond Tue, 15 Oct 2024 16:49:47 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=802358 James Gunn shares the first image of the Man of Steel's crime-fighting canine companion, Krypto, for his anticipated Superman movie.

Who’s the best boy? Krypto, that’s who! Superman’s forever-faithful canine companion, Krypto, is making his debut today for James Gunn’s Superman, with a moving image of the Man of Steel and his very good boy enjoying a moment away from the madness of planet Earth. Gunn shared the photo on social media on Tuesday alongside a brief history of how Krypto became a part of the filmmaker’s highly-anticipated film, starring David Corenswet as Big Blue.

Today’s image of Superman and Krypto shows the Last Son of Krypton and his favorite doggo, Krypto, enjoying a respite from crime-fighting on the moon. As the Earth rotates in the distance, the heroes take a moment to enjoy a job well done and listen for when they’re needed next. Surprisingly, the image is calming as the Earth spins on its axis, with Supes and Krypto observing their beloved blue dot:

Superman Krypto

In his post, Gunn says Superman‘s Krypto is inspired by his dog Ozu, whom he and Jennifer Holland (Peacemaker) adopted at the start of writing the upcoming film. Gunn details the growing pains of bringing Ozu into their home and the destruction that ensued, including eaten furniture, shoes, and Gunn’s laptop. Ozu’s arrival and unhinged disposition prompted Gunn to add Krypto to his Superman script.

Superman will star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The film will also feature Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Nicholas Hoult is also set to appear as Lex Luthor, which Gunn finally confirmed late last year.

Do you have any fun “pet destruction” stories? My wife and I adopted a kitten roughly a year and a half ago, and she’s a handful! Her name is Loki, which could not be more fitting as she is an agent of chaos. She climbs on everything, loves to sing the songs of her people, and is a bottomless pit when it comes to chowing down on cat food. I wouldn’t change anything about her; she is family.

James Gunn’s Superman comes to theaters on July 11, 2025. What do you think about the first image of Krypto? Let us know in the comments below.

David Corenswet was seen this year as the antagonist in Twisters, and while audiences new to him got a sense of his physique as his height allowed him to tower over his co-stars, he would later put on the necessary muscle to become the Man of Steel in James Gunn‘s DCU film Superman. Variety reports that Corenswet recently appeared on the Manly Things (Sort of) podcast, where he spoke of his Kryptonian transformation.

Corenswet explained, “I wasn’t 238 (pounds) when we started shooting. I was 238 at my max. I didn’t fit into any of my pants.” The new Kal-El actor spoke candidly about getting used to the new weight and he joked about his realization that he had become a 2XL shirt size when he attended the table read for Superman. He stated, “That was at the peak of my bulk. And then I slowly lost weight before we started shooting. I started shooting at about 228, 230…I know I wanted this to be my excuse to see what it felt like to gain essentially as much weight as I could.”

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce (The Wire) as Perry White; Neva Howell (Logan Lucky) as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince (The Walking Dead) as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult (The Great) as Lex Luthor.

The members of the Daily Planet newsroom have also expanded for the movie, with Beck Bennet (Saturday Night Live) set to play Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover (The Suicide Squad) as Cat Grant, and newcomer Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has previously teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.” Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Up, Up, and Away! Truth, Justice, and The American Way. These immediately cause comic fans to conjure up one specific character, The Big Blue Boy Scout. Superman. Heralded as the one that started the superhero boom in comics way back in 1938, there have been a lot of live-action versions over the years. Last year’s Flash movie highlighted some of the more popular ones and even one that had never actually been put on film. With James Gunn taking over the DCU and using a new Superman film as the starting line, what can we expect from the upcoming film?

Who’s In It?

It’s always interesting to see who will get the chance to put on the suit. Will they go more for the look of Superman, or will they find an actor who can convey the wholesomeness of the character? Sometimes, they get both. The characters surrounding him are just as crucial as the Man of Steel himself. Something past films have failed to nail. So, who is playing our favorite characters?

david corenswet, superman, james gunn

Clark Kent/Superman – David Corenswet

Corenswet will be donning the S this time around. Most film fans will have seen him in such films as Pearl and the upcoming Twisters. He made a quick stop for one episode of House Of Cards. Hopefully, he didn’t run afoul of Kevin Spacey’s diva behavior. With Superman, Corenswet will be pushed into the Hollywood spotlight. Fans online had pointed out his resemblance to the last actor to play the character on the big screen. When asked about possibly playing the character before he was confirmed for the role, he stated, ” I would love to see somebody do an upbeat, throwback [take on Superman].” Here’s hoping he gets his wish.

Rachel Brosnahan, Superman: Legacy, humor

Lois Lane – Rachel Brosnahan

Lois is always a tough character to cast. She has to be tough as nails but still soft enough to fall for Superman. Margot Kidder hit it out of the park in the 1978 film, and everyone else has been trying to play catch up ever since. With Rachel Brosnahan, they may have a winner on their hands. Her turn on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel shows she can portray someone who can hold her own but knows when she can’t do it alone. I’m excited to see what she brings to the role.

Nicolas Hoult, Lex Luthor, Superman: Legacy

Lex Luthor – Nicholas Hoult

Many fans say that no one has really nailed the comic book version of Lex Luthor. Those of us who grew up in the 80s still have a soft spot for the Gene Hackman version, but they may be right. The closest version we may have gotten was with Michael Rosenbaum on Smallville, but he had a lot more time to develop the character than most. Hopefully, Nicholas Hoult will give us what we’ve been wanting. He’s no stranger to comic book films after playing Beast in the throwback X-Men films starting with First Class. He even talked with Rosenbaum on his podcast about playing the character. Here’s hoping we get a great version of Luthor this time around. We should be okay if he’s not the sniveling version of Snyder’s Luthor.

Jonathan Kent, Superman, Pruitt Taylor-Vince

Others

Gunn has filled out some of the other characters with some interesting choices. Jimmy Olson will be played by Skyler Gisondo, who will be pretty spot-on. Neva Howell and Pruitt Taylor Vince will play Ma and Pa Kent. That last one seems to be a head-scratcher, but we’ll have to see what Gunn has in mind. Playing Perry White will be Wendell Pierce. He is a good choice, as many have enjoyed his turns in shows like The Wire and Treme.

Interestingly, we already know the film will have more superheroes than just Superman. Some confirmed characters are Guy Gardner, played by regular Gunn collaborator Nathan Fillion, and Kara Zor-El is being played by Milly Alcock. Edi Gathegi is listed as playing Mister Terrific, which is a pretty deep pull for casual moviegoers. Barry’s Anthony Carrigan will be playing Metamorpho, which is a great casting choice. Then there’s Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. We’ll have to see what other surprises the film will have in store.

Lex Luthor's Real Estate Plan Superman 1978

What’s It About?

Of course, we don’t know yet. With superheroes being big money makers at the box office, they tend to get pretty tightlipped about the films’ plots until they get closer to release. As long as it’s not about Lex Luthor trying to pull off a real estate scheme or another origin story. We have gotten both done over and over again in the past. Even Brandon Routh’s Superman Returns ended up with Luthor creating an entire island of Kryptonite. When will that guy have enough land?

For years, comic fans have been clamoring to see Lex Luthor in his battle armor and for Brainiac to make an appearance. Both have happened in the TV shows that were on the CW for years, but maybe it’s finally time to happen in James Gunn’s Superman. Hopefully, James Gunn will listen, as both things are way overdue. The recent photo of David Corenswet in the new Superman suit shows something big happening in the background that could indicate a Braniac appearance.

The hope for the film is to show that Superman’s old-school morals are still relevant to a modern audience. One thing Snyder’s Man Of Steel was dinged for was throwing out his old values for a contemporary sensibility. He even kills Zod at the end. Many said his old values didn’t work anymore, but Marvel then showed that was false in Captain America: Winter Soldier. I hope Gunn keeps this in mind and brings us a throwback to what Superman used to stand for.

Superman

The Suit

An interesting thing about the new Superman suit is the biggest reappearance in the franchise. The red trunks are back! As time passed, DC Comics started to phase out the trunks of their characters. They said it was from a bygone era that had been irrelevant for decades. Strong Men in the circus were shown to wear trunks over their tights, and the characters’ original designs used this. Most don’t even know why that was a thing, and they were eliminated across the board. They have come back in the comics for Superman, and now it looks like they are back in James Gunn’s Superman.

The set photos

Of course, James Gunn’s Superman hasn’t been without controversy. Shortly after production began, the internet started getting flooded with unofficial pictures taken on-set. While some didn’t like the way Corenswet’s supersuit looked, the most controversial aspect – by far – is how Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern looks:

Fan reaction on Twitter got pretty heated, but many also thought those who are skeptical about how the character looks should give James Gunn the benefit of the doubt considering how well he did with the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.

When Can We See It?

It’s going to be a while. Production started in March and won’t hit screens until July 11th, 2025. To mark the release date, Gunn unveiled the film’s official, retro-style Superman logo online:

This year, the only DC movie we are getting in the theater is the follow-up to the Joker film. If you’re craving superhero action, head to your favorite streaming service and rent the animated Crisis On Infinite Earths films. The three-part animated film has lots of Superman action and is a fun adaptation of the classic comic story.

James Gunn’s Superman movie is currently shooting in Cleveland, and over the last week, we’ve seen plenty of photos emerging from the set. One such photo has revealed a very special cameo which honours Christopher Reeve, who played Superman in four movies.

Will Reeve, Christopher’s youngest son, will make a cameo in Superman. He’s said to be playing a TV reporter in the film, which shouldn’t be too much of a stretch as he works as an ABC News correspondent.

Will, along with his older siblings Matthew and Alexandra, was also featured in the Super/Man documentary, which celebrates his father’s life and disability activism following the horse-riding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. “The majority of my memories of my dad involve him after the accident because I was not yet three years old when he was injured,” Will told Variety at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. “So to see his entire life leading up until that time laid out so poetically and cinematically and authentically by our wonderful directors has been a real gift for me.” You can check out a review of the documentary from our own Chris Bumbray right here.

He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

All eyes have been on James Gunn’s upcoming DC Universe debut with Superman. The film has been in production for a number of weeks, and casting news continues to pour in. Most notably, it is getting revealed who will join Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olson and Perry White in the newsroom. It was recently reported that Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald have joined the cast of Superman as Cat Grant and Ron Troupe, respectively. Cat Grant is a gossip columnist who was introduced as a potential love interest for Clark Kent, while Ron Troupe is regarded as one of the Daily Planet’s best reporters.

Today, courtesy of CBR, fans can get a first look at the Daily Planet in James Gunn’s Superman. DCU Updates posted photos on social media of the entrance to the famous Metropolis newspaper building. The pictures come from the Cleveland subreddit page, where it is revealed that the former Leader Building on Superior Avenue is being repurposed into the iconic workplace. A commenter even notes that surrounding buildings on the street are showcasing signs for fictional Metropolis businesses.

It seems we’ll be seeing a lot of the Daily Planet in James Gunn’s Superman, as the director has assembled quite the cast of characters to fill the ranks of the newspaper. THR reports that Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald have joined the cast of Superman as Cat Grant and Ron Troupe, respectively.

Cat Grant is a gossip columnist who was introduced as a potential love interest for Clark Kent. The character was created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway and has made the leap to live-action several times before, notably by Tracy Scoggins in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and by Calista Flockhart in Supergirl. As for Ron Troupe, the character was created by Jerry Ordway and Tom Grummett and is regarded as one of the Daily Planet’s best reporters. In other Daily Planet casting news, it was announced earlier this week that Saturday Night Live‘s Beck Bennett would be playing Steve Lombard, the brash and arrogant sports reporter who enjoys playing childish practical jokes on Clark Kent.

Mikaela Hoover has appeared in several James Gunn movies, including Super, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Christopher McDonald is a newcomer to the screen, not iconic Happy Gilmore actor Christopher MacDonald.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce as Perry White; Neva Howell as Martha Kent; Pruitt Taylor-Vince as Jonathan Kent; and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Beck Bennett, Superman

James Gunn’s Superman is still in the midst of production in Atlanta, and it’s been reported that Beck Bennett, best known for Saturday Night Live, has joined the cast as a “notable reporter” at the Daily Planet.

The initial reports didn’t specify exactly who Beck Bennett plays in Superman, but James Gunn confirmed on Instagram that he would play Steve Lombard, a brash and arrogant sports reporter who enjoys playing childish practical jokes on Clark Kent. A recently released photo of several Superman cast members included Bennett, who is seen with a mustache, which Lombard typically sports.

We got our first official look at Corenswet suited up as Superman last month, and the results were mixed, to say the least. The position Corenswet was in didn’t do the suit any favours as it looked wrinkled and bunched in the wrong places, but most fans want to see more before they pass judgment.

Superman, new costume

The first official look at David Corenswet as the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie was revealed yesterday, and opinions are quite mixed. Instead of the traditional action pose fans were expecting, Gunn chose to show Superman in the midst of putting on his boots (one at a time, just like us!) while an unknown threat looms outside. Unfortunately, this position doesn’t do the suit any favours as it looks wrinkled and bunched in the wrong places, but all in all, it looks alright to me. You’ve got the trunks back, plus Superman’s classic hair curl. Corsenswet does look great in the role, and the suit itself seems inspired by the New 52 version combined with a Kingdom Come logo. It does appear to be slightly battle-damaged, suggesting that this isn’t the first threat he’s faced that day.

Superman, David Corenswet, costume

Some fans have also taken issue with the leisurely pace Superman is taking to get dressed, especially given the potential threat outside, but hey, it’s a photo, a split second frozen in time, which is really the time Superman needs.

So, I leave it to you: Take the poll below and tell us what you think of Superman’s new costume!

James Gunn debunks conspiracy theory that he was planning Superman’s reboot during The Suicide Squad https://www.joblo.com/james-gunn-conspiracy-theory/ https://www.joblo.com/james-gunn-conspiracy-theory/#respond Tue, 30 Apr 2024 13:11:33 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=766829 As Gunn's Superman production continues, a new theory suggests Gunn planned Cavill's departure while making The Suicide Squad.

Filming for James Gunn’s Superman seems to be going smoothly. However, there is still a stigma surrounding the film as fans of the DCEU are still maintaining that Henry Cavill’s Superman should have been given more chances to flourish. However, there is now a theory that Gunn may have forced Cavill and the DECU into the phantom zone when Nathan Fillion gave people the impression that Gunn has been working on his DCU reboot since 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

According to Deadline, Fillion, a friend of Gunn’s, turned heads when he told an anecdote on Collider, “We were actually at the premiere party after Suicide Squad and he [Gunn] was in a huge crowd of people. …He goes, ‘Hey, did Peter [Safran] tell you what we’ve got for you next?’ I said, ‘No, he hasn’t said.’ He looked around like someone was gonna be listening. We were in a throng of people, but he leaned over and said, ‘You’re gonna be Guy Gardner.’” This prompted people to think that Gunn had been planning the DCU way before the DCEU was considered to end at Warner Bros.

A fan quoted Fillion to Gunn on Threads, and since Gunn would normally engage with fans, he would explain that Fillion had mistakingly said it was the premiere of The Suicide Squad when it was actually the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, when Gunn had already been planning for Superman. “I don’t quite understand how that fits,” Gunn addressed on Threads. “Aside from the fact I had no interest in running DC until Peter decided to do it with me so he could do the exec stuff & I could focus on creative, when I was hired to write Superman it was always intended as & pitched as a new Superman story, so why would I lie about not planning that at the Squad premiere which would have amounted to the same thing at the end of the day? How does this particular conspiracy theory make sense?”

David Corenswet is our new Man of Steel, but before landing the leading role in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, he had auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, at least, that was the rumour.

Responding to a fan on Threads, Gunn confirmed that Corenset did indeed audition for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but admitted that he doesn’t actually recall it. “I asked him about it and he said he did so I believe him, but I don’t remember it,” Gunn said. The fan also asked if Superman’s flying scenes in the new movie might be similar to Adam Warlock’s flying scenes from Guardians 3. “No, what we’re doing now for flying is much more complex than what was done for [Adam Warlock],” Gunn responded.

Although Gunn hasn’t been shy about reusing actors, things might have been very different had David Corenswet won the role of Adam Warlock. Will Poulter wound up playing the role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and did a fantastic job.

Yesterday, The Wrap had the scoop on who would play Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, and now they’ve got the inside story on Martha Kent as well. The outlet reports that Neva Howell has been cast as Martha Kent in Superman, joining Pruitt Taylor-Vince as Jonathan Kent. Together, the pair are the human adoptive parents of Clark Kent.

As with Taylor-Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell will be the latest in a long line of actors who have played Martha Kent in movies and television, including Phyllis Thaxter in the original Superman movie, Annette O’Toole in Smallville, Eva Marie Saint in Superman Returns, and Diane Lane in Man of Steel. Jonathan Kent, Superman, Pruitt Taylor-Vince

According to The Wrap, Pruitt Taylor-Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s Superman. I can’t say that’s who I expected to play Clark Kent’s adoptive human father in the movie, but I’ve always been a big fan of the actor, who has appeared in everything from The X-Files to Deadwood to The Walking Dead.

Pruitt Taylor-Vince will join the long line of actors who have brought Jonathan Kent to life in movies and television, including Glenn Ford in the original Superman movie, John Schneider in Smallville, Kevin Costner in Man of Steel, and many more. As I mentioned above, Taylor-Vince might not feel like the obvious choice for the role, but he’s a true talent and I hope fans give him a chance.

I was first introduced to Taylor-Vince in The X-Files, but the actor has appeared in a hell of a lot throughout his career, including movies such as Mississippi Burning, JFK, Natural Born Killers, Identity, and Constantine, as well as TV shows such as Highlander, Alias, CSI, The Mentalist, Justified, True Blood, Stranger Things, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Blacklist, and more.

Here we all were on the day of the cast read through.” That’s a nice gesture from the fellas and shows that there is faith within the family for the project and future of DC. Here’s hoping that the gift being a reprint and not an original isn’t a bad omen…

Formerly titled Superman: Legacy, Gunn’s Superman will take on the heroic task of helping DC “reset” their cinematic brand after an extensive streak of fare that either bombed, tanked with critics or were just too damn dark to even see what was going on! Chapter One of the DC Universe, dubbed “Gods and Monsters”, will also host The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and James Mangold’s Swamp Thing, none of which have official release dates yet.

James Gunn’s Superman is one of the biggest projects lined up by a major studio, with a summer 2025 release on the calendar. And it’s no doubt a huge gamble. While Gunn has disputed the rumored $360+ million budget, much is on the line elsewhere, as the DC co-CEO has a monumental task in turning around the studio’s reputation. With Marvel flailing about and trying to recapture their glory days, this might be the best time for DC to swoop in and save their own day. Superman will be James Gunn’s first directorial effort since leaving Marvel, having bid farewell with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

A copy of Action Comics #1 is up for auction next month and is expected to set a new record for the highest-priced comic book ever.

The Lexes meet! English actor Nicholas Hoult has had an illustrious career, which already includes a go-around as a comic book superhero in a big franchise as he played Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, in the later versions of the X-Men movies. Now, he will be playing Superman’s famous arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor, for James Gunn in the upcoming DCU reboot, Superman. The film has commenced its production with each day getting teases left and right with Gunn posting photos from the set and a big teasing reveal of the new Superman suit. In one of the cast images, Nicholas Hoult is shown in full bald glory as he reports for duty as Lex.

Just prior to filming, Hoult would stop by Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast for an interview. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Hoult discussed his preparation for playing Lex. Hoult revealed that some dialogue from the comic, All-Star Superman, provided the inspiration for the direction of his incarnation. He explained, “There’s that bit in All-Star Superman [comic book series] where he talks about his muscles being real and hard work and all that. I kind of took that as a little bit of fuel for the fire.” However, he would point out that it’s more of a psychological jumping off point for his portrayal and that we won’t likely be showing off his physique in the film.

Of course, although Rosenbaum is now a prominent podcast host, it’s not lost on Hoult that he’s talking to a vet of the character and even revealed that Rosenbaum’s Smallville interpretation was his first exposure to the character in live action and it became his personal favorite. “The first ever Lex I saw was you. Yeah, I grew up, Smallville was on. That was the show I would watch and see my first iterations of Superman and Lex and all those stories. I’ve since seen Richard Donner’s movies and all the other ones and kind of seen some of the other performances but you’re like the one. … It’s the best.”

The Renfield star also commented on his experience auditioning for Gunn. He revealed that Gunn has the “ability to keep things fun and alive and try things in the moment and be like, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’ And that’s something that I really enjoy. … That’s the whole process of prep for me is like, be prepared as possible so when you get there you can throw it all away and do whatever you want in the moment.”

When James Gunn announced that production had begun on Superman, he included a close-up of the new costume covered in snow, and now we know why. While speaking with Svalbardposten, Gunn revealed that the first scene he filmed for Superman was shot in Svalbard and featured Superman fleeing to the Fortress of Solitude.

We have filmed the first scenes, which show Superman fleeing to the ice fortress,” Gunn said. “We wanted a place that was beautiful and felt like being in the middle of the Arctic, so we looked at several places in the world. But there were many things that sold Svalbard for us over the other places. First, there is the natural beauty. But there’s also the fact that you’ll find a varied landscape here that you won’t find anywhere else. Nature gives a special feeling.” We’ve seen the Fortress of Solitude many times in previous Superman adaptations, but it’s always a special location.

Gunn added that they attracted a few curious onlookers, which he’s fine with so long as they’re not trying to sneak photos. “We have had some who have been curious, yes, who have stood and watched,” he said. “But that’s perfectly fine. And that’s a big difference. Because being interested in just watching is something completely different than when you have people trying to sneak into the set to take pictures that they can make money from by selling online.

Superman is set to star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen; and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Nicholas Hoult is also set to appear as Lex Luthor, which Gunn finally confirmed late last year.

Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Considering the stature of and how much is riding on James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, it’s no surprise that there has been a wealth of rumors and speculation about pretty much every aspect of it. Gunn has dropped some crumbs for fans through set photos and costume reveals, but that doesn’t mean fake leaks haven’t hit the internet. Now, Gunn is calling them out for not just trying to trick fans but doing it so poorly.

Responding to a Threads follower asking about a supposed picture from the set of Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy), James Gunn called out the utter ridiculousness of the image, which was obviously generated by AI. Hitting on the lack of texture, cartoonish outfit and physical deformities, let’s check out what Gunn had to say about the Superman image. “Let’s see. Can the man on the left take a photo holding an amorphous black blob while looking through an eyeball on the front of his cap? Can the man on the right’s torso grow out of his right hip and can he be stupid enough to wear his pants with the drawstring in the back? Are David Corenswet’s hands made of wax without any bones or veins? And might Superman’s trunks be knitted with yarn? Ask yourself these questions and I’m certain you’ll be able to answer the question on your own.”

Considering this Superman stunt is one of the most obvious fake images to ever “leak” from a movie set – watermark or not – and Gunn handled it the way it deserved to be. But we also can’t help but wonder just how detailed such an image will get as AI technology progresses. We’ve already begun to see the threat of it within the industry – with execs not nearly as eager to slow it down as the creative types – but how many filmmakers are as connected as Superman‘s James Gunn with audiences to slow down rumors on the web? It might look absolutely ridiculous to most of us, but this most definitely fooled a lot of people who just don’t know any better. As such, there have already been calls for Gunn to just release a picture of the full costume to help avoid confusion and misinformation.

Are you concerned that the general public will fall for fake leaks as AI technology advances? Share your thoughts below.

James Gunn’s Superman movie is now in production, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few more cast members to be announced. THR has reported that Wendell Pierce, best known for his work on The Wire, will play Perry White in Superman, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet.

We’ve seen a few actors portray Perry White on the big screen, including Jackie Cooper, who played the role in Superman: The Movie, Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Frank Langella took over the role for Superman Returns, with Laurence Fishburne stepping in for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Wendell Pierce joins quite the cast with Superman, which is set to star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. The cast also includes Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Nicholas Hoult is also set to appear as Lex Luthor, which Gunn finally confirmed late last year.

Rachel Brosnahan commemorated the start of filming with a TikTok video alongside David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, with the captain “A supervillain, a journalist and an alien walk into a bar…”

Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has teased that Superman will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. James Gunn took to Instagram to celebrate the first day of principal photograph on Superman: Legacy, except, that’s not what the movie is called anymore. The new title of Superman: Legacy is now simply… Superman.

Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman: Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.

The image which James Gunn posted on Instagram includes a close-up of Superman’s suit covered in snow, which could be our first official look at the new costume. I can’t wait to see more. Warner Bros. really needs a hit to launch this new DC Universe, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that Superman will get things started on the right foot.

James Gunn has been sharing his excitement for the upcoming start of Superman: Legacy this week. Previously, he shared a photo of him showing the stars of Peacemaker, Jennifer Holland and Freddie Stroma, the set of the film. He also shared a cast photo at the table read of the film. The caption on the photo read, “After the table read with the #Superman cast. Eve, Mr. Terrific, Superman/Clark, Otis, Lex, producer Peter Safran, Jimmy, Metamorpho, Lois, Hawkgirl, me, Guy, The Engineer all together for the first time! What a wonderful day.” The photo also showcases Nicholas Hoult’s new bald look for playing Lex Luthor in the film.

The DCU inaugural film is due to start shooting next week, and one person who is ecstatic about it is Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. According to Variety, Zaslav gave a fourth-quarter earnings call this morning, which touched on a lot of the studio’s upcoming projects, like the Harry Potter TV series on Max. Besides Barbie, Warner Bros. is definitely feeling the impact of flops from the past year, but the CEO is confident about this new Man of Steel incarnation. He states, “Bottom line, the studio has really been underperforming — including at the end of the year where we had some real struggle — but we’re very optimistic about this year, and it has given us the chance to have a lot of upside in the next two years.”

Warner Bros. Discovery’s CFO, Gunnar Wiedenfels, also chimed in to say, “On the film side, obviously this is going to continue to be a hit-driven business. Just last year was a great example, with the greatest success in the film studio’s history, and some real challenges across the industry on the superhero side.”

Superman: Legacy also added John Murphy as the film’s composer. Murphy’s previous work includes musical arrangements for The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn made his enthusiastic announcement on Instagram about working with him again, “Happy to announce that my frequent collaborator @johnmurphycomposer is scoring #SupermanLegacy. John was one of the first people I called when I finished the script many months ago as I knew how incredibly important the score was to this production. John has been working tirelessly since, creating hours worth of music that we’ll play on set as we shoot & use in the edit & that will eventually be recorded with a glorious symphony for all of you. Welcome to the DCU, John!”

Anticipation for James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is heating up, and today, we’ve got a brand-new look at the cast in a behind-the-scenes image following a table read from the set. In the photo, Nicholas Hoult debuts his shaved head to play Lex Luthor, the billionaire genius and Superman’s greatest frenemy. Hoult stands smiling at the center of the image, with David Corenswet’s arm draped across his shoulders. The image also features Rachel Brosnahan, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, María Gabriela de Faría, and James Gunn at the center of the action.

Superman: Legacy recently gained John Murphy as the film’s composer. Murphy’s previous work includes musical arrangements for The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

“Happy to announce that my frequent collaborator @johnmurphycomposer is scoring #SupermanLegacy,” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “John was one of the first people I called when I finished the script many months ago as I knew how incredibly important the score was to this production. John has been working tirelessly since, creating hours worth of music that we’ll play on set as we shoot & use in the edit & that will eventually be recorded with a glorious symphony for all of you. Welcome to the DCU, John!”

A late addition to the cast is Milly Alcock, who plays Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. Kara’s role in Gunn’s DCU is more significant than appearing in Superman: Legacy. She also leads the upcoming superhero spectacle Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowbased on the limited comic book series written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Everly.

Here’s the official synopsis for King and Everly’s gripping Supergirl story:

Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame.

Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.

King and Everly’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow presents a very different Kara Zor-El than most fans are used to. The story begins with Kara enduring a wicked hangover. As she cusses her way toward sobriety, Kara becomes mixed up in a mission that pushes her powers and heart to the limit.

James Gunn wants to keep plot details for Superman: Legacy a mystery, though a brief summary reads: “Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.”

What do you think of Superman: Legacy’s bold and beautiful cast? How do you like Hoult’s shaved head? As someone who shaved his beyond-shoulder-length hair off two days ago, it’s a refreshing experience. I wonder if Hoult feels the same.

All eyes of comic book movie fans are on James Gunn as he takes up the task of rebooting the whole DC film universe. Regardless of the perception of Gunn by the devoted DC followers, the filmmaker has a habit of engaging with fans directly on social media. He has a tendency to answer questions, dispel rumors, gauge public opinion, get involved with debates and just be as transparent as he can. Part of the fun for Gunn has also been teasing the little nuggets of information that he’ll drop here and there about the projects he’s working on. Now that he’s especially under the microscope with his Superman: Legacy film, people online pick up on what information can be given for this anchor entry into the new universe.

Gunn also has to walk a fine line with speculation being made with every new post he makes. ComicBook.com has reported on a photo that Gunn posted on his Instagram, where he took a selfie with two of his actors from the DC series, Peacemaker, as they visited the set of Superman: Legacy. This may have led to some rumblings amongst people online, but Gunn was quick to clarify that these actors were merely taking a tour of the production and are not involved with the film. His photo has a caption that reads, “With Freddie Stroma & @jenniferlholland showing them around the #Superman sets (no they’re not in the movie).”

While the DC film universe gets its overhaul, two projects remain in the revamping. Last year’s Blue Beetle, which was originally conceived and made for the DCEU, is officially part of the new DCU. And Gunn’s own series, Peacemaker, which is a spin-off of his DCEU film The Suicide Squad, is due to return on HBO and Max. Holland had expressed her excitement about her character’s arc, “I love her character arc through the whole season. I think it’s really, really nuanced and it doesn’t rush itself. I really love the way that it was written into the whole series. I think, for me, I didn’t want to hold back. I wanted Harcourt to be as cold and closed off as she could be in the earlier episodes, because I wanted her to really have that full character arc throughout the season.”

Additionally, Gunn insists that the existence of Peacemaker won’t make things confusing with the new universe getting rebooted. Gunn said, “You’ll have to wait and see how that works out!” Gunn was then asked why he doesn’t just make a different show instead of risking confusion with the shift between universe. He answered, “Because it’s my favorite thing to do, it’s the biggest original Max show ever, and I have a way in. It won’t be confusing.“

Superman: Legacy flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.

There’s some confusion flying circles around James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, with Egyptian-born entertainer Bassem Youseff saying he was fired from the project after showing support for Palestine during a Piers Morgan interview. According to Youseff, DC Studios offered him a role as a villain in the upcoming superhero spectacle. The official reason given for Youseff getting pulled from the cast list is a script change, but “the Jon Stewart of the Middle East” says the missed opportunity aligns with him showing support for Palestine in an interview.

However, a source close to the production says Youseff’s timeline of events needs to be corrected. The source says the decision to pass on Youseff’s involvement happened before the Piers Morgan interview.

“You’ve been very outspoken on behalf of Palestinian humanity and you lost a role in the new Superman movie and some other projects,” Dean Obeidallah of Salon said while speaking with Youseff.

“In the United States of America,” Youssef says, “you can talk about Joe Biden, you can talk about Donald Trump, but you cannot criticize a foreign government which is kind of, like, very sad, you know? And then because of that, I was cast in the movie Superman, and then they told me, ‘We changed the script’ after this Piers Morgan interview, and I want to assume good faith.”

“I understand maybe the people who are, you know, in charge, they took the decision, looked at me and didn’t want to have me and maybe I understand,” he goes on. “If I’m Arab Muslim, I was the head of Warner Bros.; I wouldn’t like a pro-zionist or pro-Isreal to be in my movie if he attacked my people.”

As today’s story went viral, James Gunn took to X/Twitter to say reports about Youseff being stripped from Superman: Legacy happened before the comedian’s Piers Morgan interview. IGN dug into the matter, with a source confirming that Gunn was in talks with Youseff to play the character Rumaan Harjavti. The character no longer appears in Superman: Legacy, with changes to the script happening in September. Sources say Youseff was never offered the role, and plans to cut the character occurred before he voiced his support for Palestine.

David Corenswet (Pearl) will star in Superman: Legacy as Clark Kent alongside Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. We’ll also see Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; and Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho. It was also recently announced that María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) would be playing The Engineer, a member of The Authority.

Superman: Legacy arrives faster than a speeding bullet in theaters on July 11, 2025.

Superman: Legacy is set to kick off production next month, and director James Gunn took to Instagram to announce that John Murphy will be the composer for the upcoming DCU movie. The pair have worked together quite a bit, as Murphy composed the scores for The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Happy to announce that my frequent collaborator @johnmurphycomposer is scoring #SupermanLegacy,” Gunn wrote on Instagram. “John was one of the first people I called when I finished the script many months ago as I knew how incredibly important the score was to this production. John has been working tirelessly since, creating hours worth of music that we’ll play on set as we shoot & use in the edit & that will eventually be recorded with a glorious symphony for all of you. Welcome to the DCU, John!” In addition to his work with Gunn, Murphy is also known for Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, 28 Days Later, Miami Vice, Sunshine, 28 Weeks Later, Kick-Ass, and more.

Superman: Legacy will star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms.

Co-chair of DC Studios Peter Safran has teased that Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story and will focus on “Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned.Superman: Legacy is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Milly Alcock, Supergirl,

James Gunn didn’t take long to decide on his new Supergirl as The Wrap reports that House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is now in talks to take on the role.

It’s expected that Supergirl will make her debut in a future DCU project, and while it’s been assumed that the project will be Superman: Legacy, it could easily be something else. Milly Alcock will then take on the leading role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. THR adds that the movie could start shooting as early as this fall, assuming Warner Bros. is able to sign a director soon.

Milly Alcock was first reported to be up for the role earlier this month alongside Emilia Jones (Locke & Key), and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters). Just last week, it was revealed that the list had been narrowed down to Alcock and Donnelly. Hollywood works fast… sometimes. Gunn confirmed the news on Instagram, saying “Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for #Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by @tomking_tk, @bilquis and Ana Nogueira.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be scripted by Ana Nogueira and based on the Tom King comic series of the same name. The search is still on for a director, but Gunn has teased that this version of Supergirl will be different. “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” Gunn said. “She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re use to seeing.

James Gunn is currently prepping Superman: Legacy, which is expected to start shooting in March. The film will star David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane. We’ll also see Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Nicholas Hoult is also set to appear as Lex Luthor, which Gunn finally confirmed last month. Superman: Legacy is slated to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

According to THR, screen tests for the role of Supergirl took place yesterday, with sources saying that the casting has been narrowed down to Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) and Meg Donnelly (The Winchesters).

DC Studios’ James Gunn and Peter Safran were said to be present for the Supergirl testing. The character is expected to be introduced in Superman: Legacy before taking the lead in her own movie, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly were first mentioned as contenders for the Supergirl role two weeks ago, along with Emilia Jones (Locke & Key).

Superman: Legacy is still far off but filming is slated to begin this March. And so while the DC Universe begins its reboot under the “Gods and Monsters” label, there are many wishing the franchise luck. Some are even offering advice, as Jesse Eisenberg has done for the next Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult – and it might be about the best wisdom he can instill: “Don’t watch me!”

Both Eisenberg and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – wherein the actor played the Man of Steel’s arch nemesis – were heavily criticized upon release. Eisenberg in particular was blasted for going over-the-top and drawing too closely to Heath Ledger’s turn as The Joker. Still, despite this, Eisenberg still holds Lex Luthor close, saying at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Whenever you play a role you feel connected to it…There’s no way around it. Any time you do anything, even if it’s a movie that’s a Hollywood kind of thing, you connect.” Eisenberg would also cameo in Justice League. As for David Corenswet, who is set to play Clark Kent aka Superman, we’re not so sure Henry Cavill will take the time to offer his own advice…

Eisenberg’s “Don’t watch me!” comment is a pretty down-to-earth response and it’s nice he can take it in stride and have fun with it years later considering how the media blasted him for his Lex Luthor. Eisenberg had previously expressed his disappointment in the reception, saying, “I thought a lot about my character…I talked with my acting coach about the character a lot, about his backstory with his father and his emotional life – and then people hate me.” Eisenberg, especially now, doesn’t expect to rejoin DC for any future projects. But stranger things have happened

Outside of Jesse Eisenberg, other notable names to take on Lex Luthor include Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, Michael Rosenbaum, and Jon Cryer.

Superman: Legacy will arrive on July 11th, 2025, kicking off this next chapter of the DCU. The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing are to follow.

What did you think of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor? Was he rightfully panned or does his interpretation work? Let us know below!

Rachel Brosnahan, Superman: Legacy, humor

As much as we loved Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman, his take on the character didn’t include much humor, but it doesn’t sound as though that will be the case with Superman: Legacy. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Rachel Brosnahan teased that the new Superman played by David Corenswet will “have a sense of humor.

I’ve really enjoyed the collaboration with James Gunn so far,” Brosnahan said. “Every single person involved in this production is just such a perfect nerd for Superman. We all grew up watching the movies. Some of us were reading the comics. So I feel like it’s being made with so much love. And I think this Superman will have a sense of humor… We’re excited to both put our own spin on things and honor the material we love so much.” The actress added that her take on Lois Lane will be “feisty, marvelous and fiercely intelligent.

In addition to David Corenswet (Pearl) as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Lois Lane, Superman: Legacy will also feature Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps; Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) as Mister Terrific; Anthony Carrigan (Barry) as Metamorpho; María Gabriela de Faría (Deadly Class) as The Engineer, a member of The Authority; Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) as Eve Teschmacher; and Skyler Gisondo (The Righteous Gemstones) as Jimmy Olsen. Superman: Legacy will no doubt be one of the biggest spectacles when it flies to screens next year. But just how much will it rely on CGI as opposed to practical effects? This was asked by one of James Gunn’s followers on Threads, to which he offered quite an unexpected – and funny – response. When asked about the role of computer-generated VFX and practical effects in Superman: Legacy, Gunn responded that “Legacy is only practical effects.” And while it wouldn’t have been entirely unexpected for followers to call him out for trolling them, many got on board with the laughs, pondering if lead David Corenswet can actually fly. Hey, it couldn’t hurt to have that on his resume!

The reactions on X (Twitter) were pretty amusing:

Gunn, for his part, would go on to clarify in a more serious tone, saying, “Oh sorry misunderstood the question. Yes we have tons of practical effects like I have in my other films”, perhaps initially referencing the practical effect-heavy studio Legacy Effects. He also promised that there would be no wires showing, which could be a coy dig at the first Superman television series, in which you could sometimes see the wires strapped to George Reeves. It could also be a direct jab at Quest for Peace, in which you can also see wires – although that’s far from being the movie’s biggest problem.

Concerning budget balances on major productions such as Superman: Legacy, Gunn gave some extra insight, saying, “In general (not always), spend half the production budget on the first two acts and the second half on the third act, especially with spectacle films.” And while Gunn did note that practical effects can often cost more than CGI, surely we can expect a VFX-heavy third act in Superman: Legacy.

In addition to Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, the cast also includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Superman: Legacy arrives on July 11th, 2025.

Do you want to see Superman: Legacy make use of practical effects or will it be better off leaning on CGI? Are you looking forward to the movie? Let us know!
